The Oscar Project
As if we haven't had enough sequels lately, another one arrives this week with Tom Cruise continuing to reprise the role of Ethan Hunt in the fifth sequel to the original Mission Impossible.
If you are looking for something for your kids this weekend, look no further than Teen Titans Go! To The Movies. I'm sure you can catch up on the television series on Cartoon Network before going to see the film this weekend. On the limited release front, we have a few films that might be up for Oscars next year.
Mission: Impossible - Fallout
I have always loved the Mission: Impossible films, ever since Tom Cruise first appeared as Ethan Hunt over two decades ago. The first film was, to me, an instant classic, despite initial criticism from the people involved with the television show. The series took a little downturn with the second installment, but since 2006's Mission: Impossible III, the action keeps ramping up. I'm always a little surprised that the filmmakers can keep finding ways to put Hunt in danger. It's clear that Cruise loves playing the role and interesting to see how the character has developed over the course of now six films.
If you're looking for a good popcorn action film for the weekend, this is your best bet out of the new releases. I'm sure it will keep you on the edge of your seat and provide plenty of explosions.
Teen Titans Go! To the Movies
If you're unfamiliar with the Teen Titans, you have a few hours left to catch up on the Cartoon Network show before going to see the movies. But be warned, it's silly and self-referential to the point of being annoying at times. If you're a fan of the show, chances are you will find the film right up your alley. If you're a fan of "serious" superhero movies, you might want to go see Ant-Man and the Wasp again or wait for Venom in October. However, if you love the superhero movies and get a kick out of them not taking themselves too seriously, and being able to laugh at themselves and their place in the world of superhero movies, this may be for you after all.
When it comes to awards, I doubt that this will receive any nominations. The only category with an outside shot is Best Animated Feature and with competition from last month's The Incredibles 2, the just released Hotel Transylvania 3, and upcoming films like Ralph Breaks the Internet and The Grinch, there is a lot of quality competition in that category.
