2018 Nominee Watch – July 4th

It seems that there are always a few films released on Independence Day each year and this year is no exception. The First Purge lands in theaters this week, so a special mid-week edition of Nominee Watch is in order.

The First Purge
If you're a horror junkie, it's a safe bet that you've seen some or all of the previous Purge films. Starting with The Purge and continuing through The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year, the films have been a commercial success while not receiving very high marks from critics. None of the previous films in the franchise have received award buzz of any kind

This entry into the series shows how it all began as the title suggests. Having not seen any of the other films in the series, I expect this to be much of the same. To me, the premise is far too flawed for it to be effective as a film. If this is your type of film, go enjoy, but don't expect The First Purge to rear its ugly head at the Oscars.

Limited Releases
There are two films with limited releases this July 4th as well.

• Fireworks – Japanese anime film about several children seeking to discover what fireworks look like from the side.
• Nico, 1988 – Biopic of the final year of musician Nico's life.
