I have to say the best film releasing this weekend is likely one you've seen before. Peter Jackson's 2001 blockbuster The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring lands in a limited IMAX re-release this weekend so now is your chance to see it on the big screen if it's been a while.

Unfortunately, there are no major wide releases this weekend, yet there is plenty of star power hitting theaters and virtual releases including names like Viggo Mortensen (Green Book, The Lord of the Rings), Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, Event Horizon), Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean, Sleepy Hollow), and Kate Hudson (Almost Famous, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days).

Please support your local cinemas whenever possible as they continue to struggle throughout these difficult times.

We officially have one wide release opening this weekend as Liam Neeson looks to dethrone Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman 1984 from the top spot at the box office with the western/drug cartel action thriller The Marksman.
Picture

Wide Release

Liam Neeson brings his very particular set of skills to the US Mexico border in Arizona where he play Jim Hanson, owner of a ranch property that is about to be repossessed by the bank. While performing his own personal patrols along the border fence, he comes across a young boy, Miquel, and his mother attempting to cross into the United States and is about to contact Border Patrol when an SUV full of cartel gangsters pulls up on the Mexico side, attempting to get the two back.

When Miguel's mother is killed in a firefight, Hanson takes it upon himself to get the boy to his family in Chicago even at the risk of repercussions from the cartel.
I use Neeson's line from Taken with a little humor here, but it does feel like he can't find his way out of those types of roles. Hanson himself is a former marine and it's clear that he has continued to hone his sharpshooting skills even after leaving the service.

What I hope for in this film is that the story and relationship between Hanson and Miguel is allowed to develop. Hanson is not someone who has any love for people crossing the border, so being able to connect with this boy would be a true character growth moment.

Welcome to the first Nominee Watch of 2021. If you're a regular to this site, you know I used to do these (just about) every Thursday with a rundown of the films releasing to theaters that weekend in the U.S. With everything that happened in 2020, there weren't a lot of films releasing to theaters so I've taken this opportunity to reset and start fresh.

New Year, New Nominee Watch

The first big change here is separating out limited releases as well as virtual releases. This is something we didn't really see until just the last few months where big films are being released straight to digital platforms. This necessitated a new category for these posts and I have included the first iteration at the end of today's post.

Wide Releases

Normally you would see a handful of bigger name movies, the ones you're more apt to have heard about. Unfortunately, there are no major releases this week, so I can use this space to expand on the plan here. In previous formats, I typically provided a written summary about the film and a YouTube link to the trailer. I think I'm going to keep the YouTube trailer link, but will likely shorten the synopsis to keep things moving along, and honestly make a little less work on my end (which means I'll be able to keep up with these better for you!)

Our two big releases this weekend are a remake (of a remake) and a second sequel. What's that about there not being any new ideas in Hollywood anymore?

While my efforts over the last week and a half have been focused on getting the early episodes of The Oscar Project Podcast off the ground, I wanted to take a little time to present the films that are hitting theaters this week.

The good news about these releases is that a few of them may be up for Oscars when the nominees are announced on Monday, January 13th. I can almost guarantee several nominations for 1917 and perhaps one for Just Mercy as well. Click through the find out where the contenders are and which films may have to wait for next year.

So now that the holidays are over, it's time to slog our way through the films that didn't quite make the cut for a holiday release last year. Granted, there are some films I'm looking forward to over the next few weeks and months, but don't expect many of these to be in contention for Oscars around this time next year.

This first weekend of the year brings only one new wide release and a handful of limited releases. Check them out below.

Merry Christmas everyone a few days early. Today I take a look at the films releasing on Christmas Day this week and see where I think Oscar nominations could come from in this last week of the year before the eligibility period ends.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday this week and I will be back after the new year with new Nominee Watch posts looking ahead to the films from 2020 before gearing up for the Oscar nominations on January 13th and the awards ceremony a few weeks after that.

2019 Nominee Watch – December 20th

This weekend's releases are of two different worlds. First you have three wide releases that will all do very well at the box office in Bombshell (technically an expanded release), Cats, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. On the other side, the list of limited releases below is populated by old foreign films and documentaries that are getting small re-releases. I'm sure none of the major studios wanted to compete with the power of Disney's latest blockbuster and offering some of these old art films could drive people to smaller theaters if they are not interested in the big new releases.

As you'll read below, I think all three of the big releases this weekend will get at least a few nominations come Oscar time, but they will end up competing against one another in several categories so unfortunately they can't all win.

Despite the fact that we are right in the middle of awards season, there are not really any big awards contenders being released this weekend. The Aeronauts is one of the finalists for the Best Visual Effects award, but I don't see that or the animated PLAYMOBILE: The Movie having any sort of legs.

Even prediction sites like HSX.com have these two films very low at the box office. This may be the chance for anyone who hasn't gone already to check out Frozen II, Knives Out, or A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.
