Winter 2020 Preview of Film Sequels and Remakes

I did a post about movies based on books yesterday, so today it is the remakes and sequels post.

Just to remind you what we're looking at here, this is a list of the films scheduled for release in Winter 2020 that fall into one of the following categories:​

• Direct sequel/prequel or part of a franchise
• Remake of a previous film
• Inspired by or based on another film
• Documentary covering a specific movie, director, or actor
• Based on a video game (I added this one this time around to make room for Sonic)

January 2020

• The Grudge - Apparently a remake of the 2004 American film of the same name which itself is a remake of the 2002 Japanese film Ju-On: The Grudge. We're getting next level here.
• Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon - A sequel to the 2015 Shaun the Sheep Movie which is in turn based on the television series Shaun the Sheep, which is also based on the 1995 film A Close Shave.
• Bad Boys for Life - Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return as detectives Lowrey and Burnett in this sequel to 1995's Bad Boys and 2003's Bad Boys II.
• Dolittle - A new take on the classic Hugh Lofting story that was originally brought to the screen in 1967 with Rex Harrison as Doctor Dolittle, then again in 1998 with Eddie Murphy's Dr. Dolittle. (Note: This was also included in yesterday's book post)

February 2020

• Bird of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) - The eighth film set in the DC Extended Universe and a direct spin-off of the 2016 film Suicide Squad. (Note: This was also included in yesterday's book post)
• Fantasy Island - Based on the television series of the same name that aired from 1977-1984.
• Sonic the Hedgehog - Based on the classic 1991 Sega Genesis video game Sonic the Hedgehog.
• Downhill - Remake of the 2014 Swedish film Force Majeure.
• Brahms: The Boy II - Sequel to the 2016 horror film The Boy.
• The Call of the Wild - While obviously based on the Jack London book, it is also a remake of the 1935 film The Call of the Wild starring Clark Gable. (Note: This was also included in yesterday's book post)
• Emma - Obviously based on the Jane Austen novel, but also a remake of previous versions including Emma (1996), Aisha (2010) and apparently Clueless (1995) which I had no idea was loosely based on the book. (Note: This was also included in yesterday's book post)​

March 2020

• A Quiet Place: Part 2 - Sequel to John Krasinski's 2018 hit A Quiet Place, that garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Sound Editing.
• Mulan - The latest in the live action remakes from Disney comes in this re-imagining of 1998's Mulan. The animated version is currently available to stream on Disney+. (Note: This was also included in yesterday's book post)
• The Jesus Rolls - A double whammy here with this remake of the 1974 film Going Places in which John Turturro reprises his role of Jesus Quintana from 1998's The Big Lebowski.
