Winter 2019 Preview of Film Sequels and Remakes

After doing my list of movies based on books the other day, I realized I left out a potential category of films that might need some research prior to viewing, remakes and sequels. Just like wanting to read the book before seeing the movie, I usually like to see the original version of a film if there is a remake or the first in a series if there are sequels.

So today I am posting a list of upcoming films for the winter of 2019 that fall into one of the following categories:​

• Direct sequel/prequel or part of a franchise
• Remake of a previous film
• Inspired by or based on another film

I have included trailers for those films that have trailers as of this writing. Please let me know if I missed any that you know of!

January 2019

• Hellboy - Remake of the 2004 and 2008 films directed by Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro. (Update: Release now pushed back to April 2019)
• The Upside - based on the motion picture Les Intouchables by Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache
• Glass - Sequel to Unbreakable and Split
• Miss Bala - Remake of the 2011 film of the same name

February 2019

• Jacob’s Ladder - Based on the 1990 film of the same name
• The Lego Movie 2 - sequel to the 2014 film
• What Men Want - Conceptual successor (not sequel) to What Women Want
• Happy Death Day 2U - Sequel to Happy Death Day
• How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World - Sequel to the two previous films

March 2019

• Captain Marvel - Part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe
• ​Dumbo - ​Based on the 1941 Disney animated classic of the same name
