Continuing my coverage of predictions, today I am tackling four categories including Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Costume Design.

If you missed the previous prediction posts, please check out my Sound and Visual Predictions and Design, Cinematography, and Editing Predictions.

Best Original Score

Picture
Front Runners:
Mary Poppins Returns - Disney has a strong track record for producing strong motion picture soundtracks and I think Mary Poppins returns the House of Mouse to this category once again.
First Man - With a recent win in this category at the Critics' Choice Awards, I think the film is assured a nomination here.
Black Panther - Panther was an early front runner when the music album was released alongside the film early in 2018 but I think it has stayed in the musical consciousness and stands a good chance of getting a nomination.
If Beale Street Could Talk - Though it hasn't gotten as much pub as some films, talk is strong about the soundtrack for Beale Street.
Isle of Dogs - Releasing earlier in the year could hurt this film, but it may still sneak into the top five.

First one out:
Ready Player One - Hollywood score veteran Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump) just misses landing a nomination in the category this year.

Best Original Song

Front Runners:
"Shallow" A Star is Born - There is no doubt that Shallow will be receiving a nomination for Best song and I highly expect it to win.
"I'll Fight" RBG - A strong voice (Jennifer Hudson) singing a powerful message for a film about an equally powerful woman stands a very strong chance of receiving a nomination.
"All the Stars" Black Panther - Kendrick Lamar's soundtrack for the film has been lauded since its release and this single shows the strength of the individual songs.
"Trip a Little Light Fantastic" Mary Poppins Returns - Out of the two big songs to come out of the film, this is the one that hearkens back to Supercalif...well you know.
"Girls in the Movies" Dumplin' - Let's get Dolly Parton into the Oscar ceremony to perform her song from this Netflix film.

First one out:
"The Place Where Lost Things Go" Mary Poppins Returns - Mary Poppins Returns can't get both songs in this year, so one has to fall out of the running.

Best Makeup and Hairstyling

Front Runners:
One note about this category, unlike most of the Oscar categories, this only nominates three films each year. For that reason I am including my top three along with one additional option.
Vice - If you've seen the film or even the trailers, you know that Christian Bale is nearly unrecognizable as Dick Cheney with the weight he gained and the make up and prosthetic pieces he wore during filming..
Border - This is a film you probably have not heard of but should check out for the makeup alone. I think it receives a nomination but ultimately doesn't take home the top prize.
Bohemian Rhapsody - On the makeup front, this one may be a little less intense than the other two nominees above, but I think this one gets in on the hairstyling side.

First one out:
Black Panther - Some folks theorize that Wakanda will make a showing in this category and while I would love to see a nomination, I feel that it will be left out of the smaller field. With a five film category, it would be a sure bet.

Best Costume Design

Picture
Front Runners:
The Favourite - Another category where I see The Favourite running ahead of the pack. The costumes in this film look wonderful and should garner plenty of Oscar attention.
Mary Poppins Returns - I love the categories where someone ends up getting nominated against themselves and this is one of those opportunities with Sandy Powell in charge of the costuming for both Mary Poppins and The Favourite.
Black Panther - Where Ryan Coogler's film may get left out of the makeup and hair category above, I think the beautiful Wakandan clothing will propel it into a nomination for costumes here.
Mary Queen of Scots - Two films about English queens in this category could make things interesting.
Bohemian Rhapsody - Make that three queens in this category if you count Freddie Mercury and company. Look for some love here but ultimately no win in the category.

First one out:
BlacKkKlansman - I hate that I'm ending up with Spike Lee's film just missing some of these early categories, but I think the period costumes here are going to be close, but not quote enough to get the nomination. Who knows, I might be wrong about all those white sheets.

I'm just a film buff who wants to watch great movies. Where else to find the best, than the list of those nominated by the Academy each year?
