THE OSCAR PROJECT
The Oscar Project
A quest to watch every Oscar nominated film
Now that we've passed Labor Day and it's back to school time for just about everyone, I thought it would be a good time to look ahead to the awarding of the Oscars in 2019 for films released this year. The first thing to look at is the key dates related to the nominations, voting, and when the awards are actually handed out.
November 18, 2018
The first key date is for the Governors Awards this November. If you watch the Oscars broadcast each year, you've seen some highlights of this event during the telecast. Awards handed out at this event include the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award (most recently given to Francis Ford Coppola in 2010), the Jean Hersholt Humanitarin Award (Debbie Reynolds in 2015) and the Honorary Award (Angès Varda, Charles Burnett, Donald Sutherland, and Owen Roizman in 2017)
January 7-14, 2019
The nomination period is open for one week. More on the actual nomination process at a later date.
January 22, 2019
This is the moment many filmmakers will be waiting for, to see if they are on the list of nominees. This will also be the time when The Oscar Project updates the Oscar Tracker to include the nominees for the coming year.
February 9, 2019
You've also probably seen clips of the Scientific and Technical Awards ceremony. Awards presented at this time include the Gordon E. Sawyer Award, the John A. Bonner Medal of Commendation, Technical Achievement Awards, and the Scientific and Engineering Award.
February 12-19, 2019
It's crunch time as the final voting period is open for one week.
February 24, 2019
Get your tuxedos and gowns ready, it's time for the 91st Academy Awards Ceremony which will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood with the live television broadcast airing on ABC. At this time, we do not yet know who the host will be but I think it's safe to say Jimmy Kimmel is off the list after hosting the last two years.
With less than six months left until the statues are handed out, there are still plenty of films yet to be released that will vie for the awards. Check back regularly for news and updates related to the upcoming Oscars.
I'm just a film buff who wants to watch great movies. Where else to find the best, than the list of those nominated by the Academy each year?
