Fall 2019 Preview of Film Sequels and Remakes

Since I did an updated post about movies based on books yesterday, I wanted to make sure the remakes and sequels received the same attention. With so many remakes, reboots, franchises, and sequels at the box office today, I often like to see the original film(s) before checking out a new addition to a series.

Just to remind you what we're looking at here, this is a list of the films scheduled for release in Fall 2019 that fall into one of the following categories:​

• Direct sequel/prequel or part of a franchise
• Remake of a previous film
• Inspired by or based on another film
• Documentary covering a specific movie, director, or actor

October 2019

• Joker - Based on the character immortalized by Jack Nicholson in Batman, directed by Tim Burton and Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, directed by Christopher Nolan. (Note this was also included in the book post)
• Memory: The Origins of Alien - Documentary about the science fiction classic Alien, directed by Ridley Scott. (Bonus: This film gets a limited release on October 11th, with a re-release of the original Alien film in theaters for a special engagement October 13th!)
• The Addams Family - Animated version based on the 1991 film directed by Barry Sonnenfeld as well as the television series of the 1960s.
• Along Came the Devil II - Sequel to the 2018 film Along Came the Devil, directed by Jason DeVan.
• Are You Afraid of the Dark? - Based on the Nickelodeon series of the same name that ran from 1990-2000.
• High Strung Free Dance - Sequel to the 2016 film High Strung, directed by Michael Damian.
• Maleficent: Mistress of Evil - Angelina Jolie reprises her role in this sequel to Maleficent, directed by Robert Stromberg.
• Zombieland: Double Tap - Direct sequel to 2009's Zombieland, directed by Ruben Fleischer and starring Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin.
• QT8: The First Eight - Documentary feature that focuses on Quentin Tarantino's first two decades of film work.
• The Kill Team - A fictionalized account of events covered in a 2013 documentary of the same name.

November 2019

• Terminator: Dark Fate - Arnold Schwarzenegger, Edward Fulong, and Linda Hamilton all return together for the sixth film in the Terminator franchise, originally directed by James Cameron.
• Charlie's Angels - An update of the 2000 film of the same name which itself was a hit television show in the 1970s.
• Frozen II - Sequel to one of the biggest animated films of the last decade, originally released in 2013.
• Queen & Slim - Modern retelling of the story of Bonnie & Clyde.

December 2019

• Brahms: The Boy II - Sequel to the 2016 film The Boy, directed by William Brent Bell.
• Black Christmas - Remake of the 1974 film by the same name about group of teens stalked by a stranger during Christmas break.
• Jumanji: The Next Level - Sequel to the 2017 film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle which itself was a remake of the 1995 Robin Williams classic Jumanji.
• Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon - Sequel to the 2015 film Shaun the Sheep Movie which was based on the television series Shaun the Sheep.
• Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - The final(?) installment of the nine film Skywalker saga that make up the core of the Star Wars film franchise.
• Spies in Disguise - Animated feature based on the 2009 short film titled "Pigeon: Impossible."
