The Oscar Project
You may have heard that The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is currently completing construction on a new museum, appropriately called the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Located in Los Angeles, it is scheduled to open in 2019, though an official opening date has not been announced yet. What was announced earlier this week was a listing of the inaugural long-term exhibit at the museum, a retrospective of filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki. This initial exhibit will be followed by an exploration of black cinema from 1900-1970, reportedly arriving at the museum in the fall of 2020. I don't live anywhere near Los Angeles, but I know for a fact that I will be visiting this museum as soon as possible once it opens. The information that is coming out of the Academy related to this project looks fantastic and it is sure to bring in a large number of famous film artifacts. I have included a number of images provided by the museums website below. The first set of images are related to their "Where Dreams Are Made" exhibit which will occupy a full two floors of the museum. If the actual exhibits look anything like the drawings below, it will be fantastic. The fact that things like Bonnie and Clyde can reside on the wall right next to Brokeback Mountain and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is awesome. Beyond exhibits like the one shown above, there will be a tremendous number of artifacts from across the spectrum of film history. Again, seeing pieces of classics such as The Wizard of Oz and Casablanca alongside costumes from more recent films like Dallas Buyers Club and Frida is what will make this museum so awesome. There are also artifacts from the days before films were actually projected on a screen and piece that were never seen on screen at all, but helped create the films behind the scenes. The typewriter that Psycho was written on and makeup kits are just some of the things that helped make the films happen. This museum will be a must visit for any serious fan of films and of the Oscars and Academy history. I will be sure to keep you updated with information as it is released over the next several months leading up to the grand opening in 2019.
