2019 Short Lists

On Monday this week the Academy announced short lists of potential nominees for nine different categories including Documentary Feature, Documentary Short, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Original Song, Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, and Visual Effects.

The links on the names of the films themselves are links to trailers, usually on YouTube. If there are places where you can view the film in its entirety, I have included a separate link with the name of the source, i.e. Netflix, Amazon Prime, Vimeo, etc.

Best Documentary Feature

Fifteen films have been selected to the short list for Best Documentary Feature. Five nominees will come from the group of films which includes:

• The Cave
• The Edge of Democracy (Netflix)

• For Sama (PBS)
• The Great Hack (Netflix)

• ​One Child Nation (Amazon Prime)

Best Documentary Short Subject

There are ten films on the short list for Best Documentary Short Subject that will make up five nominees. The films are:

• "Ghosts of Sugar Land" (Netflix)
• "In the Absence"
• "Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You're a Girl)"

• "Life Overtakes Me" (Netflix)

• "Walk Run Cha-Cha"

Best International Feature Film

A reminder that this category has been renamed from the previous Best Foreign Language Film as of this year. The ten short listed films are:

Best Makeup and Hairstyling

The Best Makeup and Hairstyling category has been expanded from 3 nominees to 5 this year. Those nominees will come from the following ten films.

• Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

Best Original Score

Best Original Score has a little bigger field to pick from. The fifteen shortlisted films that will lead to the five nominees are:
