Just a few weeks before the actual holiday, the long awaited sequel arrives in theaters this weekend with Jamie Lee Curtis reprising her role in the original Halloween film from 1978.

And if slasher films aren't your style, I highly recommend checking out The Hate U Give which expands to a wide release this weekend. It is sure to get buzz throughout award season due to the present nature of the subject matter.

Halloween
It's been 40 years since Michael Myers tormented viewers and we first heard the simple piano theme music of Halloween. There have been a number of "unofficial" sequels but this one seems to be closest to hitting the mark of the original.

As you know if you've been reading this site for any length of time, I'm not a horror buff at all. I do however know an iconic film when I see one and Halloween is nothing if not iconic. A few years ago when visiting a haunted house at the local minor league baseball park leading up to Halloween, there was a man dressed as Myers, walking around the event with the mask and a knife and everyone gave him a very wide berth. Sure, there was no real danger, but just the visual of him slowly stalking people around the haunted house was enough to give people pause.

Fast forward to today when kids still dress up as Myers for Halloween and drop the real character into a modern day Halloween rampage. This one is sure to give many of the same thrills as the original and bring the horror to an entirely new generation.

Is it going to win any awards? Probably not. Maybe for make-up, but again, horror typically does terribly at the Oscars. If you're looking to jump out of your seat though, here's your chance.

The Hate U Give
I am in the process of reading this book and hoping to finish it before going to see the film. As of this writing, the film has been getting just as many rave reviews as the book, many reviewers noting it as an important film for the age in which we live.

Now, I'm not a young black girl, but in reading the book, I am completely drawn into the world in which she lives. I don't claim to fully understand the struggles she may go through to find her place to fit in and to see friends and loved ones killed in front of her eyes for no reason. But reading the book has opened my eyes even more to things going on in our world.

I have a feeling this film will be talked about for a long time to come. There is a new star rising in Amanda Stenberg along with support from veterans like Regina Hall, Anthony Mackie, and Common. I think there may be an outside chance of a nomination for Miss Stenberg and a definite possibility of a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Go see this film, it's one that everyone needs to be exposed to.
