The Oscar Project
I thought I'd try something different and take a look at the movies slated for release in theaters this weekend, and anticipate if any of them might be nominated for Oscars this year.
Ready Player One Fortunately for me, I think there is a guaranteed nominee being released this week in Ready Player One. If the trailers I've been seeing non-stop for the past three months are any indication, it's a safe bet that Spielberg's latest film will win a nomination for Best Visual Effects. Since it is based on a popular book of the same name by Ernest Cline, a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination is an outside possibility, but I would say less likely than the effects.
I can see possible nominations for Ready Player One in Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing as well as Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design, all categories that often see science fiction films nominated.
Two other films open in wide release this weekend including the Tyler Perry film Acrimony and God's Not Dead: A Light in Darkness. I have not heard much about either of these films and only recently watched trailers for them. Acrimony I'm interested to see this film as it seems like a bit of a departure from the other films Perry is known for. His Madea character is nowhere to be seen in this psychological thriller in which a loyal wife, played by Taraji P. Henson, takes revenge on her unfaithful husband. At first blush I don't see much in the way of nomination potential here, however, Henson may have an outside chance of a Best Actress nomination. I also see slim potential for a Best Original Screenplay.
God's Not Dead: A Light in Darkness
On the surface this looks like a Christian film crossed with a murder mystery thriller. I had no idea that it was even a sequel, following two other films released over the last four years. From looking at the trailer, I do not anticipate any nominations for this film from the Academy.
