THE OSCAR PROJECT
The Oscar Project
A quest to watch every Oscar nominated film
We have another mid-week wide release and it looks like it could be a good one. I don't anticipate the type of box office reception that Crazy Rich Asians got earlier this month, but it looks like an exciting film.
Ben Kingsley (Gandhi, Schindler's List) stars as Adolf Eichmann, key organizer of the Holocaust during WWII. Operation Finale tells the story of the Israeli agent, played by Oscar Isaac (Star Wars, Ex Machina), tasked with locating Eichmann after the war and returning him to Israel to stand trial for his crimes against the Jewish population of Europe.
Not to spoil the ending, but a quick online search will tell you that the operation was successful and Eichmann was executed in Israel in 1962.
I was interested to see that director Chris Weitz previously directed films such as American Pie, The Golden Compass, The Twilight Saga: New Moon. None of these scream readiness for a historical thriller/drama, but there is also little connection between those films themselves. Who am I to argue with a director wanting to try different genres.
This is at least the fifth or sixth time Kingsley has been cast as a historic figure and was previously nominated and received the Academy Award for Best Actor for us portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi in 1982. I have not heard any Oscar buzz about his role in this film, but see his nominations in the past, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility.
If you're looking for an engaging mid-week film, this may be your best opener until mid-September.
I'm just a film buff who wants to watch great movies. Where else to find the best, than the list of those nominated by the Academy each year?
